Work Harder on Yourself than You do Your Job

“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If you work hard on your job, you can make a living. If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune… Income seldom exceeds personal development.” – Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn said the first rule of economics is that we get paid for the value we bring to the market and not our time. He suggested you develop yourself so that you can become more valuable. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett says “Ultimately, there’s one investment that supersedes all others: Invest in yourself.” Warren typically reads for four to six hours a day and began this habit long before he made his billions.

A job can be taken away from you despite working hard on it, but the skills you develop while you are working on a job are transferable to the next job. Jim suggested that we spend one hour of each workday developing ourselves so that in 5-years we could become an expert in our field.

If you don’t make a commitment to self-development by scheduling some professional reading or another form of learning on your schedule each day, you will be swept up in the momentum of your daily commitments, and it will never happen. If you don’t make self-development your number one priority, it will not be a priority.

I have seen people who were very good at their job looked over for promotion because they were indispensable. When we evaluate a career move, we shouldn’t just ask how much I will make. A better question is what new skills will I learn? How will this help my career progress? Each position should be a stepping stone to the next. We don’t want to make the mistake of accepting a dead end position.

“The most important question to ask yourself on the job is not, what am I getting; but what am I becoming?”  -Harold W. Dodds.

I wish I had taken Jim Rohn’s advice years ago.  I now schedule at least 30 minutes of professional reading into each workday. Most people make the mistake of leaving their development up to their manager or company. I hope you will do better than most people. I hope you will take ownership of your development and make getting better a priority.

“Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.”
