BRING THE JOY!

“Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” Aristotle

All day long we transition from one activity to another. We wake up. We follow a morning routine. We commute to work. We arrive at work. We begin working on a project. We stop working to attend a meeting. You get the idea.

We transition dozens of times each day, but how often do we pause between activities to mentally prepare ourselves for the next task. Learning to master these transitions is a powerful strategy for high performance.

When you are about to transition from one activity to another, take a moment to reflect. Slow your breathing down to 4 to 6 breaths per minute. This will get you out of a fight or flight state, and allow you to take control of your thoughts and set your intention for the next activity.

Ask yourself a few questions. What type of energy do I want to bring to this activity? What would I do or say, if I were the best version of myself? How can I make this next task as enjoyable as possible? What do I want to accomplish? How do I want to feel after this task is completed?

The more enjoyable you can make any activity, the better and more consistent your performance will be. This principle applies as much to your work, as it does your exercise regimen or diet. Happiness isn’t something we should put off. It is something we should find in every activity. If you can find joy in the process, progress is assured.
