Big Results are the Product of Small Decisions Made Correctly

Big results flow from small decisions made consistently. As Coach John Wooden said, “Little things make big things happen.” Small seemingly insignificant decisions produce huge results over time. In the short term, these decisions appear insignificant, because they are. If you chose to eat poorly today, it would have very little effect on your health. If you did it for a week, you might gain a pound or two. If you did it for a year, you might gain 15 or 20 pounds of body fat.

These decisions rarely matter over the course of a day, but since we are creatures of habit, these small seemingly insignificant decisions compound daily to either help us achieve our goals or take us further than ever from our goals. Most of our daily actions are done out of habit. Chances are your daily routine repeats itself over and over again. Chances are great that today, is much like yesterday was and tomorrow will be more of the same unless you change your pattern of decision making. Everything in your life can change, but if you don’t change your results will always be the same.

A useful analogy is a plane leaving from New York, headed to Tokyo. A half a degree error in navigation setting would cause the plane to miss its mark by hundreds of miles because the error was compounded over thousands of miles. Don’t neglect the little things. They really do mean a lot, over time. It is much easier to do something every day than occasionally. I find that if I don’t do something every day, I will not do it any day. Wouldn’t you agree?

So the real problem with these little things that would really help us to be more successful is that they are easy not to do. They are easy to neglect. If you are not mentally prepared to face these decisions you can fall prey to trap words like just and only. It’s just one soda, it’s only one workout.

As Jim Rohn like to say, “What is easy to do, is also easy not to do. That is the difference between success and failure.”

He suggested that if a person wanted to become an expert in their field, that they dedicate themselves to reading about their profession for an hour each day. As he liked to say, “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” “Don’t wish it were easier. Wish you were better.”

You must pre-decide what you are going to do. You can’t allow yourself to hesitate. If you do, your feelings will take over. You will start to rationalize making a poor decision, using one of the trap words like just or only to justify self-sabotage. A manta can help guide your decisions. For example, “If not today, then when?” No one ever became successful in a day. The world might suddenly recognize their talents and skill, honed over years of unseen diligent practice, but all success flows from small actions repeated daily.

Napoleon Hill said, “A big success is made up from a great number of little circumstances each of which may seem so small and insignificant most people pass them by as not being worthy of notice.”

So don’t neglect to make those countless little decisions to listen to your gut and ignore your feelings to be lazy and undisciplined. I ask you, if not today, then when?

Discipline pushes us, motivation pulls us, but intentional habits keep moving towards our goals. Change your habits, change your life!
