Make ONE REAL RESOLUTION this Year

This is the time of year where the word resolution is misused by millions of people. We will examine the formal definition. Next, we will look at how it is commonly applied to New Year’s Resolutions. Last, we will examine what it means to go after a goal with true resolve and how you can make this year different than any other year.

I am not a fan of New Year’s Resolutions because I don’t think most people actually make resolutions. They make a list of things they would like to happen. They will usually attach a list of actions they should do to achieve it. Should is a word for the underachiever. It implies that your values aren’t in line with your actions. No one does what they should. They do what they must. They do what is in line with their true values.

That brings us to the formal definition of resolution; a firm decision to do or not to do something. The critical word in this definition is the word decision. Tony Robbins provides the best definition of the word decision.

The Habit: Week-5 (Attitude is a Choice)

This week’s challenge is to identify one self-defeating attitude you have and fix it with a list designed to refocus your thoughts. It sounds to simple to possibly work, but it isn’t. By the end of this article, you will know why it works and more importantly how it works.

We all have an area of our life where we need to improve our attitude. We know that our attitude is affecting our decisions. Our lives are created by our decisions. It is often said that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond to it. Bad things happen to everyone, but what makes the difference is what we decide it means and what we decide to do about it. We can not ignore problems, but the best way to solve them is to focus on solutions; not the problem itself. Continue reading “The Habit: Week-5 (Attitude is a Choice)”

It was fascinating to learn that the Spartans were not always renowned for their discipline and toughness. Sparta was unremarkable from the other Greek city-states; before the Lycurgus Reforms. Lycurgus imposed many reforms that helped create a disciplined, warrior society in which the individual was secondary to the state. Children were raised by their parents until the age of seven, then they were raised and educated by the state in the famed Agoge until the age of seventeen. The role of each man was to win in battle or die in service to Sparta. Unlike the women of other Greek city-states, Spartan women were encouraged to learn, exercise and display bravery, so that they could pass these characteristics onto their children. Producing the next generation of Spartan warriors was a woman’s primary role in Spartan society. The only citizens that earned a headstone in Spartan society were men that fell in battle alongside their comrades and women that died during childbirth. The Habit: Week-4 (Keep a Journal)

This week’s challenge is to journal for at least 10-minutes every day. This one habit can alter the trajectory of your life. Keeping a journal has numerous benefits. Don’t make the common mistake of thinking a journal is a diary. It isn’t. The primary purpose of a diary is to record your feelings, while the primary purpose of a journal is to register your goals and thoughts so you can make better decisions. Keeping a journal allows you to:

  1. Reconnect with your goals
  2. Improve your attitude
  3. Detect your values
  4. Capture and organize great ideas
  5. Improve your problem solving
  6. Become more creative
  7. Learn to communicate better
  8. Cathartic Release

Jim Rohn produced a fantastic audio program explaining why and how to keep a journal. He was a master communicator, who mentored many hugely successful individuals. His audio program is well worth your time and money. You can purchase the CD version on his website for approximately $15, and the MP3 version for $9.95. He also produced an excellent, high-quality journal you can purchase for $29 separately. If you buy the Journal and audio CD program together you’ll save $5. These links are provided purely for your convenience, I don’t receive any compensation. Continue reading “The Habit: Week-4 (Keep a Journal)”

The Habit: Week-3 (Morning Exercise) It’s for the Mind more than the Body!

Q45-B

This week’s challenge is to wake-up 30-minutes early and exercise for at least 20-minutes. Most people that resolve to wake-up early to exercise do it with the vague goal of losing some weight and getting into shape. Those are terrible goals for several reasons. First, they aren’t clearly defined. Second, they don’t contain any emotional intensity, and last, they don’t have any deadline to create a sense of urgency. I want you to wake-up early and exercise because it will prime your mind for peak performance.

This habit has more to do with the effects it will have on your mind, and much less to do with the effects it will have on your body. Most people know that exercise releases endorphin, the body’s homegrown brand of morphine, but what most people don’t realize is that it stimulates the brain.
